The Internship Search: Simplified

As the seemingly never-ending torture of finals week comes to a close, students envision a relaxing break, cuddled up on the couch with their cats (or maybe that’s just me) and watching ABC Family’s Harry Potter weekend.

In reality, though, we know that’s not going to happen. Substitute “watching Harry Potter weekend” with “searching for internships” and that pretty much sums up the (sadly, truthful) epitome of winter break.

However, It is possible to make this process a bit easier, and knowing where to look is the first step in finding the ideal internship. While job opportunities and internship listings seem few and far between, there are hundreds of opportunities just a click away.

So, need help? Here are some of the best resources for finding your dream internship:

1. E.W. Scripps School of Journalism (http://scrippsjschool.org)Scripps

As most of you may (or may not) know, the Scripps’ homepage lists numerous internship and job opportunities. Because of our journalism school’s successful reputation, businesses want us. They want Scripps students to work for them, so what better to do than contact the school itself?

The site also stays current, deleting old internships and adding new ones as they become available. Follow Scripps on Twitter @scrippsjschool.

2. Ed 2010 (http://www.ed2010.com/jobs/whisperjobs)Ed

Offering a wide variety of communications internships, Ed 2010 is an organization designed to assist students in finding internships. Notorious for listing internship positions available in big companies, like Cosmopolitan and the Food Network, Ed 2010 is a great site for finding internships tailored directly to your skill set, as they list the job descriptions, responsibilities and requirements for interns.

3. Intern Queen (http://www.internqueen.com/internships)Intern queen

Founded by a girl who’s had more internships than we could imagine (15, to be exact), Intern Queen is an excellent resource for finding work, from fashion to public relations to graphic design.

Signing up is free and makes applying for internships significantly easier and less stressful. Once you are signed up, you upload your resume and cover letter(s) and, from there, apply for jobs straight from the site. Follow Lauren Berger, the Intern Queen, on Twitter @InternQueen.

4. Media Bistro (http://www.mediabistro.com/PRMarketing-jobs.html)Media

Similar to Intern Queen, Media Bistro allows users to apply for jobs straight from the site. However, Media Bistro is organized by field of communication, allowing users to choose from jobs ranging from online/new media to entertainment to technical writing.

It has job and internship opportunities in almost every field of communication, making it an awesome resource for finding a job tailored to your talents. Follow Media Bistro on Twitter @Mediabistro.

TED Talks are multi-length videos featuring forward-thinkers in the professional world sharing their experiences and  knowledge.  As PR junkies, we are constantly looking for new ways to innovate and reach into the depths of our creativity.

These clips are a great way to hear about others’ discoveries and how they have climbed the ladder of success.  Here are a few TED Talks videos that could inspire you along your PR journey to achievement:

1. Amy Cuddy: Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are

Whether it was McDonalds or that dream internship, we all can recall the butterflies from our first interview.  Confidence is an obvious must to obtain a 5-star performance, but a simple change in your body language before that small step into the interrogation room could give you the confidence you thought only “that girl” had.

Amy Cuddy, a successful scientist, has studied human body language and how it affects our bodies and brains.  Her studies have shown that not only do others subconsciously judge you, but you also subconsciously judge yourself.  Powerful body language results in a powerful you!

2. Nigel Marsh: How to Make Work-life Balance Work

PR majors are some of the most innovative and dedicated people in the work force.  We are extremely passionate about our careers and it’s easy for us to become soaked up in the amazing work that we do.  Public Relations is a highly demanding career as all of us who are preparing to enter its thrilling dynamics know.  In order to live a happy life it’s important to remember to find your balance.

PR experts know that being average won’t get you far.  Shawn Achor, the CEO of Good Think Inc., believes society pushes us into a norm, and he wants to explore the outliers.  He inspires the audience to think differently about how they view their road to achievement.

With his comedic charm he preaches the steps to rewire our brains into believing happiness can lead us to success.   Next time when your brain is on PR overload, keep in mind that a positive attitude can produce progressive results.

5. How to Make Stress Your Friend

Stress. WOW. I know I don’t even have to say it, but we all can relate to high stress lives, even more so as prospective PR pros.  Kelly McGonigal, a Stanford clinical psychologist, has studied stress and has landed on some amazing discoveries about our thoughts toward our stress levels and how these thoughts can impact our health.

The key is how you look at it! Negative stress can be a killer (literally), but viewing your stress positively can actually cause your body to mimic its reaction to joy and happiness.

International Travel for the Inexperienced Traveler

QuitoIn less than a month I will be traveling to Quito, Ecuador for a study abroad trip and I could not be more excited! Considering I’ve only been on a plane twice in my life and have only had one real experience abroad, preparing for this trip has been a pain in my backside. So here’s the basics of what I’ve learned so far in my how-to on preparing for traveling abroad:

Get a passport (if you already have a passport check the expiration date): I know you’re sitting there thinking, “Thanks Captain Obvious! I’m going out of the country of course I need a passport!” But let me tell you something, Lieutenant Sarcasm; putting off getting your passport can turn into a big problem.

I had a passport from my freshman year of high school, but unluckily for me it expired within five months after my study abroad. In order to leave Ecuador you need to present a passport with at least six months validity. (I recommend checking your country of travels policy on validity.) So I took my drivers license, old passport, social security card and another government issued I.D. to the post office to renew my passport. Because I was a minor when I got my first passport, those four forms of identification weren’t enough. I also needed my birth certificate and a copy of my birth certificate. Basically the only thing they didn’t need from me was a list of my ancestry and a written note from the doctor that delivered me stating that I was, in fact, myself.

I did eventually end up getting all thirty forms of the necessary documentation, filling out the application and getting my picture taken. A half an hour and $150 later, I had ordered my new passport.

Purchase your plane tickets: Make sure you have enough time to get from terminal to terminal if you have a connecting flight. I, being the inexperienced flyer I am, made sure I had plenty of time between flights… six hours to be exact. You know just in case I can’t find my terminal or get lost in the airport for five and half hours. On second thought, I’m probably going to regret that layover choice.

Pack light: You’re going on a trip, not moving you’re entire life to a foreign country. I realize you might really like those black studded heels but realistically you’re never going to wear them! Leave them behind! Only pack the necessities and when you’re dragging your suitcase through the airport by yourself, you’re going to thank me. Check ahead of time to see if you’ll have access to a laundry facility, because if so, only take enough clothes for a week. Just think the less stuff you bring, the more room you’ll have to take things back!

Embrace a more natural look: You don’t want to lug 50 different hair products or tools to another country, trust me. And this goes for the men too! Leave the hair gel behind! Take only what you need. I promise that you’re not going to want to spend an hour getting ready when you could be out exploring.

Adapters, Money, Identification, Etc.: If you plan on using any electronics you’re going to need an adapter. Research the type of outlet used in the country you’re traveling to and buy a couple adapters of that type. When traveling you don’t want to be carrying around all your money in case you get pick pocketed. Your best bet would be to take the money you will need for the day with you when you go out and leave the rest in the safe at your hostel or hotel. Same thing goes for identification; take COPIES of your passport with you and leave your original passport in your safe. In foreign countries your United States driver’s license will not work as identification, instead use a photocopy of your passport.

In Quito the American dollar is widely accepted so I won’t have to worry about changing currency, however they aren’t going to be able to break large bills for me either so I’ll be taking mainly smaller bills (10’s, 5’s and 1’s) and change.

The Not-So-Stand-Out American: Basically try not to look too American and tourist-y. Blend into the culture; wear clothing that doesn’t make you stand out. The more out of place you look, the easier target you are for pick pocketing and petty theft. If you make an effort to keep your belongings on or in front of you, you definitely reduce the risk of theft, but if you’re wearing name brand clothing that is obviously expensive you are basically holding up a sign inviting thieves to target you.

Last but definitely not least,

HAVE FUN! Traveling is fun and exciting. You get to experience a new culture with interesting customs, foods and languages. Many people don’t get the opportunity to travel so take advantage of it. Take risks and do something new! Personally, I have this crazy fear of sharks but while abroad I’ll be snorkeling with sharks and other tropical fish in the Galapagos Islands. Granted I might have a minor anxiety attack, but I’m still going to! Take chances and do something that you’ll remember forever; make the thousands of dollars you’re spending worth the trip. Don’t spend too much time stressing the little things and just look forward to the great experience ahead of you.

Travel safe and wish me luck in Quito! I’m going to need it with those sharks!

Brands That Are Taking Over Twitter

Social media has become a big part of our everyday life. It is how we communicate with one another, receive the news and express ourselves. It only makes sense for brands to keep up the pace and become a part of it, too- the ones that don’t are getting left in the dust.

All of my favorite clothing brands started tweeting late in the evening on Thanksgiving. They were letting all of their followers know about their upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. After seeing these tweets, I didn’t even check the sales on the brands’ websites that don’t have a social media presence.

Some of the best accounts I have come across are ones for food brands. My favorite is @TacoBell. I have been a longtime follower of the brand being a lover of cheap fast food. But whether you are a fan or not, this account does everything right in the marketing world.

They have just the right balance of tweets promoting their brand and interacting with their followers. If you check out their Twitter, the voice of @TacoBell is consistent and relatable. They try their best to respond to tweets from followers. Celebrities have even started to tweet at them, especially super model Chrissy Teigen. She has established such a great relationship with them via Twitter that they sent her a wedding present!

Props to whoever runs the @TacoBell account – they have really created a positive image for the brand that goes beyond just food. When super models are tweeting at you, you know you are doing something right.

Another surprisingly entertaining account is the brand @Oreo. When you first hear the word Oreo, you think “just a cookie”. Not anymore. @Oreo has created a real personality for itself on Twitter and has had a lot of fun doing it. Their tweets are usually witty, sometimes poking fun at other types of snacks like Kit Kat. They also make sure to keep up with holidays and current events. They were actually one of the first brands to acknowledge the birth of the royal baby. The day that it was announced that Kate Middleton had given birth, @Oreo was fast to tweet this:

Being in the know and always entertaining, the @Oreo personality will carry its brand far. Using their famous cookie in the pictures they tweet reminds followers how good they are every time they appear on Twitter.

Brands like these are setting the bar for others. Take notes, this is how you give a brand personality and how you don’t just become a product, but a lifestyle!

Making an ImPRession in Australia

CarlyI’ve spent most of the past four years in a small but passionate community known as Athens, Ohio. However, this past fall I spent two and half months away from my beloved home. Very, very far away. I interned at a small boutique public relations agency called Dani Lombard Public Relations in Sydney, Australia.

Each and every day I learned something new about public relations. Each and every day I learned something new about the beautiful, yet sometimes complicated world we live in. Each and every day I learned how valuable my experiences have been at Ohio University and within the ImPRessions organization, specifically.

One of the main reasons I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and intern abroad was that I knew I had enough preparation and public relations skills under my belt to survive in a foreign country.

Here are a few ways that my ImPRessions experience transferred to interning in Australia:

The value of teamwork. Being a part of ImPRessions for three years requires a tremendous amount of teamwork considering each account is split up into small teams. Last year I worked on the AVW Productions account and we were in charge of planning an event for a new video premiere called Camelittle. Each account associate worked on a different aspect of planning. I specifically worked with another account associate to create a press release for the event. We not only had to work as a team to make the whole event a success but we also had to work together to craft the perfect press release.

Similarly, Dani Lombard Public Relations has four female employees (five including me). During my stay, we all sat around the same large desk and were in constant communication with one another. Often times, we would all be working towards the same goal but each have a different task to accomplish. Teamwork seems like a simple and easily attainable skill but in reality it takes a great deal of patience and practice.

Written communication. Throughout my career as an ImPRessions member, I have volunteered to write a number of PR-related assignments. I knew that these writing tasks would only help me in the long run. Boy, was I WRITE! (get it?!) I had the opportunity to write a number of press releases, pitches and blog posts as an account associate. I believe I gained more PR writing experience through ImPRessions than through my actual coursework.

When I was asked to write a press release for a client at Dani Lombard I first had a minor jump-up-and-down in my seat moment and then proceeded to write the release with confidence. Although writing styles are different and the average length of a press release in Australia is at least two pages, I was still able to show my co-workers that my writing skills are transferable in a global industry.

Knowing your media. Working with an ImPRessions client that spanned the Athens area required me to be very familiar with Dammanthe local media such as The Post, The Athens Messenger, WOUB and other event websites. Depending on the story or event my team was trying to pitch, we would tailor our message to a certain group of people or a certain publication. For example, the Camelittle event previously mentioned was tailored towards young children since it was an animated film. My team and I then crafted our message for Athens elementary school and middle school kids along with their parents.

During my international internship, I had to become very familiar with the media my co-workers pitched to. Dani Lombard has a wide variety of clients. However, its focus is on natural beauty products. Therefore, I became very familiar with magazines such as Australian Vogue, Women’s Fitness, Women’s Health and various other weekly gossip magazines. Knowing your media will allow you to craft your very best pitch to the right audience, no matter where you are in the world.

What’s Better – Vine vs. Instagram?

vineOne of the big questions in the social media world since Instagram video came out is, which better; Vine or Instagram? The answer to this question lies within the personal preference of the user. There are pros and cons to each platform and each of these pros and cons lead to the ultimate decision that the user will make. If this is a question that still bounces around in your mind, here’s a list of pros and cons to ease your mind a bit:

Why Vine Rocks:

  • A six second time limit forces a Vine user to think outside the box and be as innovative as possible.
  • Vine constantly loops the video, so if you miss something you can watch it again.
  • Twitter and Vine are linked together, so when you post something on Vine it automatically goes to your Twitter page, too.

Why Instagram Rocks:

  • Instagram has a longer recording time (15 seconds) which allows more time to film a typical TV spot.
  • The app also offers more creativity with filters and editing features that enhance the display of the video.
  • Instagram also allows to share on not just Facebook and Twitter, but also Tumblr, Flickr and Foursquare.

Not So Good About Vine:

  • Vine lacks editing tools and style filters.
  • You can’t pull prerecorded videos from camera roll.
  • Vine’s user numbers have decreased 2.9 million to 1.35 million, a 50 percent decrease.

Troubles With Instagram:

  • Instagram doesn’t have the looping option for videos.
  • Just like Vine, Instagram doesn’t support pulling prerecorded videos from camera roll.
  • Because of the 15 second time limit, there are complaints of the video taking too long to load.

With these pros and cons in mind, a user now has a better chance of making a decision that is in line with their personal preference. Whatever the choice, with practice and proper use, you’ll become a video pro in no time!

Twitter Lessons from the A-List

As technology is evolving, so are the ethics of journalism. Part of the changing technology is the emerging presence and influence of social media. In 140 characters you can enhance or inhibit your professional career – so no pressure.

By having a presence on Twitter you are not only conveying your thoughts, ideas and work, but you’re building a brand that may be an employer’s first impression of you. And what better way to learn what to do, and not do, on Twitter than look at the people who arguably have the most influence on the Twitter community?

Here’s some lessons to take away from some of our favorite A-list celebrities.

Do show your personality. Oftentimes I will like, or dislike, a celebrity based on how funny and relatable I find their tweets. And yes, I do realize this may not be the best course of action.

Take Anna Kendrick for example. I saw her in Twilight and loved her in Pitch Perfect, but I never really thought twice about her until I found her Twitter, after which she instantly became one of my favorite celebrities.

Do promote your work. Promoting your work is important and now with the influence of the Internet, we have more power than ever before to set ourselves apart and promote our work.

Do connect with others. By reaching out to a firm or company before meeting with them, you have a great opportunity to set an amazing first impression. By connecting with others you can also promote collaborations. Jimmy Fallon does this before his show each night.

Don’t get into Twitter feuds. This one’s for you Kanye. Getting into a fight with Jimmy Kimmel on Twitter…probably not the smartest idea. So if you’re having an issue with a friend, colleague or stranger, it might be best to not display your emotions on the Internet for everyone to see. A simple phone call or text message might suffice in this situation.

Don’t drunk tweet. We get it, you partied, maybe drank a little too much. That doesn’t mean you have to turn to Twitter every time you have a crazy night. There are some things that are better left off the Internet, and drunken tweets are one of them.

LIamDon’t tweet only promotional things. When people only tweet promotional things to advance their careers, I get bored. It’s always more fun to follow people who spice up their promotions with some personality or fun anecdote.
